Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

In this weeks blogpost I want to talk about the difference between a growth and a fixed mindset and in the end you should be convinced to apply a growth mindset to every life situation.

Far to often in life we approach challenges with a fixed mindset. We tell ourselves we can't do certain things, because we are just not talented enough or because we failed once. This prevents us from trying new things and far worse, it prevents us from growth. Now you probably ask yourself what a fixed mindset even is, so let me give you a brief definition. People with a fixed mindset see their skills and intelligence as a fixed assets, which cannot be improved. They only see the unfair advantages in people who are more succesfull then themself. Compared to that someone with a growth mindset thinks that everything is a skill, which can be learned and mastered by investing time and effort. They do see that talent plays a certain role in mastering a skill, but they also realize that there is a hell lot of aspects that can lead to improvement.

The advatages of moving through life with a growth mindset are quite obvious, so I want to encourage you, to not tell yourself whenever you face a challenging task, which you struggle to complete, because you haven't aquired the necessary skills yet, I can't do that, tell yourself I can't do that yet. Then think about, why you can not do those things yet and focus on the stuff which lays under your controll, put in the time and effort to improve this specific skill and I can guarantee you, you will get better. This mindset shift can be applied to basically everything and not just obvious skills like for example playing the guitar. Also more complex skills like confidence is not born, it can and has to be learned.

Especially in the age of digitalization it is easier than ever to learn stuff, because there are endless ressources online to basically every skill which is out there and those resssources are even free most of the time. Skillshare is an especially good place to learn stuff online. It is basically the Youtube for learning anything from playing chess to learning for exams. I highly recommend doing the one month free trial and even a subscription is definitely worth it.#NotSponsored

I hope I convinced you to shift your fixed mindset to a growth mindset, but I can tell you that this is not the path of least resistance. Facing a challenge and telling yourself, that you are not capable of succeeding and taking this as an excuse of not tackling your weaknesses is definitely the easier way, but it is also the way of not growing in life.

Cheers Emil
